I am not a footballer but a great fan of football. However I played cricket a lot at club level, once it is used to be my favourite game until I was introduced football game due to my son, when he got started playing. In last 5 years’ time, I converted completely to football favourite from cricket because of my son and Messi, Ronaldo.
I came to know that entire world is divided into two fan following categories i.e. Leonel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. One like the other. In fact at my home also, my son is a great fan of C.Ronaldo whereas myself is of L.Messi.
I watched and analysed both very carefully and have my own opinion is, not to mention unbiased. I applied my experience of software product or tool evaluation, comparison and selection, which is one of my profession. I had a very closer look on both players’ attitude, playing style, facts and figures and other important criteria to come up with my selection or decision.
I don’t want to go into much details, facts and figure of both as there are so many analysis, people have already done and available on the internet. Still I felt better analysis can be done, hence this is.
Comparison is based on important criteria which matters most in world football like discipline, team player, good passing, assist, goal scoring (free kicks, penalty, headers, left, right foot goal), dribbling, consistency, playing style, hard work, talent, marketable.
Best footballer judged depending on how a player has performed in a season or in a competition for a club or country. As per their contribution they can be best at that moment.
But this comparison is covering entire career of both the players.

From point-based analysis and goal statistics it very close but it is clear that Messi has better advantage. See all kinds of statistics, awards, records and accomplishments, you will find Messi has edge over Ronaldo for sure.
Let's see from other angle. Both are having great with unique characteristics but with certain strengths and weaknesses.
What matters in football, ultimately team effort to win a game. One or two can be star performers. But it is also true that without a better team, you can’t be a better or the best individual player. Same applies here for both. Messi plays with the best club i.e. Barcelona in spain and with Argentina (little weaker team). Whereas C.Ronaldo played with the best clubs and country of Europe. Statistically C.Ronaldo has little advantage internationally just because Portugal is slightly better team than Argentina.
But some players are exceptional and performs consistently, treat to watch and have a greater impact and fan following. Messi and C.Ronaldo are greatest time in football history, we’re lucky to witness. I think we must enjoy watching both rather comparing. But comparison comes because of fan following and marketing icons etc.

Natural playing style, consistency, great passing and dribbling skills make Messi stand out from C.Ronaldo. From the numbers game perspective Mess played 150 games lesser than C.Ronaldo but still equal to or close next to C.Ronaldo in terms of total goals and accomplishments.
On the other side header and penalty shoot goals and Marketing style icon and brand makes C.Ronaldo stand out from Messi.
Hence, from all of this the final decision on who is better footballer between both has to be Messi for sure based on above analysis.
